Lt Col David Sanchez Keynote:Aligning Corporate Information Governance and Content#KMWorld

Lt Col David Sanchez, Deputy PM, USAF Pilot Physician Program explains why an information governance plan is critical.

[These are my notes from the KMWorld 2012 Conference. Since I’m publishing them as soon as possible after the end of a session, they may contain the occasional typographical or grammatical error. Please excuse those. To the extent I’ve made any editorial comments, I’ve shown those in brackets.]

NOTES:

  • Their Big Challenges. (1) Lack of information transparency. (2) Non-compliance with records management policies. (3) Increasing frequency of security breaches. (4) They have 27,000 metadata tags. This makes it very difficult for people in different parts of the organization to manage even a single content item. (5) They have 72,000 potential site collections into which that individual content item can be placed. Which one do you choose? (6) They have an open knowledge network for unclassified content and a secret knowledge network for classified content. (7) Managing human behavior — try not to leave too many important decisions to individual choices. You need consistency and predictability.
  • Policies. They have policies regarding (1) access = who can see which information? (2) information rights management – prevents misuse of information.
  • Metadata is Critical. Sanchez believes that metadata is the single most critical factor in improving search results. They have done controlled tests that show that search using metadata outperforms search without metadata. Therefore, Sanchez’s philosophy is to “throw as much metadata as possible” against each content item.

  1. Lt Col Sanchez – Thank you for posting these notes. They confirm the notes I took and fill in some points I missed because you had to rush a little. This helps in finishing my Trip Report! Can you confirm what were the DoD instructions/directives/regulations you mentioned regarding data disposition and records management?
